Yes. CCR §87465 requires that staff assisting with any health-related service, including tube feeding, have documented training and demonstrated competency for that specific task. Without a training record on file, CDSS considers the care unauthorized, which can result in a citation and a requirement to immediately discontinue the service.
Training must be provided by or under the supervision of a licensed health professional familiar with PEG tube care. A registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, or physician is appropriate. The facility administrator should coordinate with the resident's physician or hospice team to arrange the initial training session.
A competency skills checklist is a document where the trainer signs off that each staff member performed each skill correctly during return demonstration. CDSS surveyors may ask to see it during an inspection. Without a completed checklist, the training cannot be verified and the citation risk remains.
Retraining is required whenever the resident's physician changes the feeding protocol, whenever a staff member makes an error related to tube care, and at least annually as part of your regular health-related service competency review cycle. New staff must be trained before providing the service independently.
