All direct care staff must receive dementia-specific training covering the nature and symptoms of dementia, person-centered care approaches, behavioral de-escalation, and communication techniques. Training must be documented and updated at least annually.
If you serve residents with dementia but have not applied for a CDSS special care designation, you still need appropriate behavioral management and elopement policies in your standard Plan of Operation. The dementia-specific plan is formally required once you seek the designation.
CCR §87705 requires environments designed to reduce confusion and wandering risks. This includes appropriate signage, secured exits, safe outdoor spaces, reduced stimulation in common areas, and access to reminiscence and sensory engagement programming.
